Women Deliver 2010: "Delivering Solutions for Girls and Women"
2nd Global Conference - Washington DC

We were privileged to be able to attend the Women Deliver 2010 global conference from June 7th through 9th, reaching out to new partners and communities and sharing the vision of our programs. We participated in a plenary session and mingled with other attendees at our booth representing UCSF Bixby Center for Global and Reproductive Health and the Center of Expertise on Global Women’s Health and Empowerment.

preparing for panel discussion Preparing for Panel Discussion on No Women, No Cry with Nan Strauss, Amnesty International; Christy Turlington Burns, CARE advocate and director of the featured film; Tammy Haddad, panel moderator; Suellen Miller, Safe Motherhood Programs; Mary Olive Smith, documentary specialist; Lisa Russell, filmmaker (from left to right)

During the plenary session our supporter Christy Turlington Burns screened her documentary on maternal health called No Woman, No Cry. Suellen Miller, as part of the technical advisory team to the film, had the honor of introducing the film at the plenary. The film was followed by a lively panel discussion with Christy, Suellen, Nan, Lisa, and Mary that was mediated by Tammy.

At our booth we were excited to interact with a steady flow of interested conference participants. We had a video playing that explained the uses of, how to apply, and the practicality of using the LifeWrap. Also available was an actual LifeWrap for people to examine as we talked with them. Many people with different levels of involvement in maternal health, ranging from midwifes to ministers of health, approached us to discuss our projects and data. Many African health care providers were enthusiastic about the need for a device like the LifeWrap in their areas of expertise. This enthusiasm shows how we were able to spread the word of the LifeWrap, bridging the gap between research and saving lives.

Mother's Day Event, Art Exhibition and Reception

This event was held just before Mother's Day to enable us to celebrate our own mothers while remembering those who die becoming mothers. Thanks to all who were involved and who attended this fantastic event. Special thanks to Mark Tuschman and Susan Rae Ross, the photographers who donated their beautiful work to LifeWraps.

Many pictures were sold and everyone was deeply moved by the speeches including one from Elizabeth Stinson who vividly recalled her own experience of hemorrhage following the birth of her child and how Dr. Miller saved her life. Also very inspiring was Adeoti Oshinowo, a medical student from Nigeria who explained what a real difference the LifeWrap makes in developing countries and how much it means for medical staff to have something like this that they can use to save lives.
